Local Activity Idea - Holy Jim Falls
5 Mile (8 km) Hike - Moderate to Strenuous - Allow 4 hours
More than one trail leads to the top of Santiago Peak, but the most popular among hikers is the Holy Jim trail. The complete Holy Jim trail gains about 4,000 feet (1,200 m) in elevation and is about 16 miles (26 km) round trip. It is a moderate to strenuous hike and is most enjoyable during spring and winter due to the large number of insects during warmer times of the year.
Recommended: Cub Scouts will find the much shorter 5 mile (8 km) round trip to the Holy Jim Waterfall very enjoyable. It takes about 1 hour in each direction with the cubs. If there is visible water in the creek at the fire station, you will benefit from waterproof hiking boots. And as always, take your own drinking water.
Note: Although you can drive a passenger car to the trail-head, trucks and SUVs are a better match for the dirt road.
